316L (1.4404)

316 grade stainless steel is a material quality obtained by adding molybdenum and more nickel into 304 quality stainless steel. Corrosion resistance of 316 stainless steel materials is very good even in harsh conditional environments (sea water, acidic liquids, etc.) thanks to its chemical content. Furthermore, the ultimate strength of 316 quality materials is much higher than that of 304 quality materials. If the parts are to be welded together, they are subject to corrosion risk due to heating. In order to avoid such situations, 316L (1.4404) stainless steel material with less carbon content should be used. 316L grade stainless steel is similar to 316 in stainless steel, but it contains lower carbon content. Therefore, 316L stainless steel thick sections do not require post annealing.

Grading Quality Characteristics

General features Point

Explanation

Corrosion Resistance: The corrosion resistance of this material is quite good. In harder conditions, duplex (1.4462) quality material can be preferred.
Mechanical Properties: 316L quality material, 304 and 304L quality material shows similar mechanical properties. For higher ground strength, 431, duplex (1.4462) or 630 (1.4542 PH17.4) may be preferred.
Vulnerability to be beaten: This quality stainless steel has a good forging susceptibility.
Weldability: The weldability of this quality stainless is good. Due to the low carbon content, the carbide is minimized at the moment of welding.
Machinability of: All 316L quality western materials sold by our company have a good workability. In order to make workability easier in environments where corrosion resistance is insignificant, 304 or 430F grade stainless steel products can be preferred.
NOTE: Scores are indicated on 5 and are intended to facilitate understanding of the nature of the material. It is only intended to make comparisons between qualities without relying on any value.

Usage areas

The area of use of 316L stainless steel is very wide thanks to the quality and chemical content of the material. For example, in the tanks and storage tanks of corrosive liquids, in the chemical and petrochemical industries, in steam boilers, in the paint industry, in food plants, and in mining, stainless steel materials are often used in grades 316L quality and derivatives. Due to the chemical content of 316L grade stainless steel and lower carbon content compared to 316 stainless steel, it is recommended that 316L grade stainless steel be preferred if parts are to be welded.

Summary of Quality Characteristics

316L stainless is numbered 1.4404 quality stainless according to EN standard.

316L grade stainless is also called X2CrNiMo17-12-2 according to EN standard.

316 and 316L stainless steel quality stainless steel 304 quality stainless with the most widely used stainless steel grades.

This quality is of the stainless steel grade.

These stainless steel grade materials can be well formed and welded well.

Stainless steel of this quality does not attract magnets and has a high corrosion resistance.

Corrosion resistance of 316L quality stainless steel, 304 and 304L quality is better than stainlessa.
